Edmond de Rothschild Foundations

Transforming our societies for the long term

From tradition
to philanthropic innovation

Several centuries of family commitment have fashioned the Rothschild family's approach to philanthropy. This tradition is seen in our support for the arts and culture, through our donations and financial support for great artists like Chopin and Jordi Savall. It is also apparent in our social action, symbolized as early as 1904 by the construction of affordable housing, the forerunner of today's social housing. The family also made a commitment to the healthcare field very early on with the creation of pioneering institutions like the Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild.

Two new areas have been added to our historical commitment to art and healthcare: education and entrepreneurship.

Ariane and Benjamin de Rothschild are modernizing the Fondations Edmond de Rothschild by implementing a more structured, committed and demanding form of philanthropy. Innovation and sharing play a key role in this approach. The missions are intended to promote the empowerment of initiators of daring solutions for an inclusive and collaborative society. This is combined with an ongoing commitment to making a contribution to an ever-changing world.

We have had to rethink our role to transpose our family's philanthropic tradition to the 21st century. We have had to become more professional and rely on our entrepreneurial experience to change scale while remaining loyal to the pioneering spirit of our ancestors.

Talent for change

The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations have always strived for excellence and today continue to explore new paths in their search for tomorrow’s talent.

For example, with the Scale Up programme, the approach takes the form of tutoring. The private bankers of the Edmond de Rothschild Group act as mentors for young social entrepreneurs. The Fondations combine social impact with economic effectiveness by giving these young people the means to grow and succeed.

The Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Program enables young PhD students to continue their research and contribute to reducing the inequalities between men and women over the long term.

Meeting the social challenges of a world in motion, acting as a catalyst for talent, finding innovative answers to the multiple issues of diversity and development and making an economically and humanly viable impact are the goals of the family Foundations. Thanks to successive targeted projects, the local initiatives promoted by the ten Edmond de Rothschild Foundations have been laying the groundwork for sustainable global change led by an international network which is unique in the world.

Regardless if we are working with individuals, companies, governments, civil society or other Foundations, we combine the energy and resources needed to meet current challenges. By breaking down the barriers between fields and communities, each person can discover his or her own strengths and become a catalyst for change. We build multiple bridges between today's world and the more collaborative, multi-faceted world of tomorrow through the daring programmes we develop.

An entrepreneurial approach

Transforming energy into success

The Rothschild family's goal has always been to become involved in each philanthropic project, to see it blossom and to help bring it to maturity.

See ahead. Understand the stakes and anticipate tomorrow's challenges. Identify the most inspired projects and the most innovative partners. Manage risk. Assist, advise and transmit tools and methodologies. Then, evaluate the impact and ensure continued performance over time. The Rothschild family's philanthropic investment is based on a well-thought out, methodical and practical entrepreneurial strategy.
